Around 1941, the local Lions Club began pushing for a golf course in Brigham City. The area north of the junction of US30 and SR69 (900 North Main Street) was selected and, at the time, was a pasture, cattle shed, and feed yard. The Brigham City Diner and Gas Station stood at the junction (pictures included). The area was largely a bog due to the ground being filled with springs. In 1947, they started to work on managing the groundwater issue and had the area largely prepared for a golf course by 1948.
In anticipation of the golf course opening, a country club was established in 1948 and C.E. Merrell became the first president, succeeded by C.S. Hamilton and then Lloyd Reese. The clubhouse was built and was ready for use for Peach Days, 1949. The course was designed by Ernie Schneiter, Sr. On July 1, 1949, the golf course began to let out players with Dean Candland as the first pro.
The official opening date was noted in the newspaper as 4/13/1952, though LaMont Glover had already had a hole in one by 1951 and followed up with another in 1952. In 1955, The Box Elder Journal noted that it was 50 cents per round during the week. On the weekends, it was $1 for the first round but 50 cents thereafter. Season tickets were $25 for a single or $30 for man and wife. Juniors were $10. In 1969, the cost was $1 for weekdays and $1.25 on weekends.
The original course had several par 3s and played as a 2500-yard par 33 but, in 1965, additional property northwest of the original 9 was acquired and was used to make longer holes resulting in the course becoming a par 37. No. 1 was 325 yards; No. 2 was a par 3, 175-yard hole; No. 3 was 385 yards; -crossing the road- No. 4 was a 550 yard, dogleg left par 5; No. 5 was 355 yards; No. 6 was 390 yards; -crossing back- No. 7 was 480 yards; No. 8 was 300 yards, and No. 9 was 340 yards with a gradual turn to the right along the highway. The course record was set by Reid Goodliffe and Gene Munk at 63 and Mike Malaska set the record of 65 for competition.
In 1989, Eagle Mountain Golf Course was up and running and the old golf course became neglected while property companies considered building options. In 1994, the course was purchased and reopened as a golf course called “Willows Golf Course.” Eventually it was sold and currently Visionary Homes is filling it with townhomes called, “North Point.”
Do you have memories or better photos of the old course? We'd love to hear and see them!
